In honor of Fat Tuesday, we wanted to feature a drink that is well known in New Orleans but not as recognizable outside of the French Quarter. The Absinthe Frappe was originally made at the Old Absinthe House on Bourbon Street in the 1860′s. It has been enjoyed by such notable people like Oscar Wilde, General Robert E. Lee, P.T. Barnum and Mark Twain.
Absinthe is an anise flavored spirit and has no sugar in it, therefore it is classified as a liquor and not a liqueur. If you have yet to try Absinthe by itself and don’t typically like a bitter licorice taste, then this spirit may not be your cup of tea. Absinthe is made from grande wormwood and has been outlawed in the U.S. since 1912 due to its narcotic properties. In 2007, the ban was lifted and today, some of the brands include Pernod, Herbstaint (produced by the Sazerac Co. in New Orleans), Anisette, Lucid, and Ojen.
Now back to the drink!
Ingredients:
- 1 1/2 oz. Absinthe
- 1/2 oz. simple syrup
- 2-3 oz. soda water
- 10 mint leaves
- Ice (crushed)
In an Old Fashioned Glass, muddle mint leaves in the simple syrup. Add Absinthe, and then crushed ice. Top off the drink with soda water. Cheers!
