Boston Bacon Takedown 2011

What’s better than waking up on a Sunday morning than the smell of bacon cooking in the kitchen? How about the smell of 17 amateur cooks whipping up their best bacon recipe using 15 pounds of bacon each! This past Sunday, The Armory in Somerville hosted the Boston Bacon Takedown 2011.  Sponsored in part by Hormel Black Label, this event is the brain child of Matt Timms, who has been taking his show on the road for the last eight years, challenging amateur cooks in a winner gets bragging rights competition. While bacon has become a popular, almost cult ingredient, past challenges in Boston have included lamb and cookies.

BeantownEats was invited to attend the event and here is a quick look at some of the bacon-based creations…

The collective favorite among our group was the BBQ Bacon Jam. Made with caramelized onions and molasses, this jam had a surprisingly spicy kick to it, which for us, set it apart from the other contestants. This recipe, which earned second place in the voters eyes, was created by Matt O’Shea of Allston, who said it took him several attempts tweaking his recipe before arriving at the final product. While his jam was bottled with a homemade label, he said it was not for sale. We are hopeful that after his Sunday success and all of the others that asked to buy the jam, that Matt will consider this option.

It wasn’t just the food up for judging; a poster contest also accompanied the Bacon Takedown. In a hilariously creative concept, the winners were Guinevere Osborn & Phil Kern, for a pig made completely out of waffles, affectionately named Abner.

Although it was a competition, in my opinion, it was everyone that attended the event and got to try all of the bacon recipes were the real winners.  Because after all, who doesn’t like bacon?!
