Next time you are in a rush at Logan Airport and are hungry, make sure you stand in the food court line that guarantees movement. At UFood Grill, their goal is to get the consumer quality tasting food that is better for you in under three and half minutes after you place your order. UFood Grill (thanks to bostonfoodbloggers) at the Landmark Center in Fenway opened it’s doors last night and hosted Boston-based food bloggers for a quick info session and a complimentary tasting menu. What struck me the most about this event was UFood’s dedication and passion for their concept. UFood’s philosophy is so rational that I don’t see how this already successful chain could not do well in the future. With America’s obesity on the rise and cash flow on the decline, UFood Grill provides an option that we desperately need: healthy food that actually tastes good at a reasonable price. When you choose UFood Grill, will you pay more than McDonalds? Yes. Will you get higher-quality, more nutritious meal? Definitely. UFood’s UnFries are baked in canola oil. Their rough cut and crispiness will have you fooled into thinking they are deep fried. Best of all, there’s no salt added! Go figure that here you are actually allowed to salt your own food. There is no assumption that you would want a high-sodium meal. And you know what? These un-fries taste so good they don’t even need salt. Here is the real kicker: UFood’s UnFries have over 30% less calories and over 40% less fat than the average fast-food chain. But why would such a health conscious outfit have fries on their menu at all? It all goes back to their philosophy. It’s a known fact that Americans love traditional French fries. (Number 1 seller on UFood’s menu is UnFries.) UFood figures that people are going to order them anyways, so why not offer a healthier alternative? If you’re still not convinced, read this article featured in Improper Bostonian from a few years back. In a quick synopsis and parity of Super Size Me, a local doubter put UFood Grill (formally KnowFat Grille) to the test. If you want to read more and find out the results, click here to read the full article. UFood Grill has a lot going for them, thanks to a dedicated marketing team and a solid vision. On your next lunch break, head to Downtown Crossing and check out UFood Grill. With their 3.5 min service goal, you’ll have plenty of time for this healthy and inspiring meal. From right to left: Bistro Salad, Fire-Grilled Sirloin Tips, Pesto Pizza, Better Bacon Cheeseburger, Chocolate and Vanilla Frozen Yogurt. Overall, we were pleasantly surprised and happy with the menu, but if we could recommend that you try one dish it would be the Steak tips. They were very nicely seasoned and cooked perfectly. Visit a UFood Grill location at the Landmark Center in Fenway, Downtown Crossing, on Arsenal Street in Watertown or in Terminal B and C at Logan Airport. UPDATE (June 2013): According to their website, the MA locations include Downtown Crossing and Logan Airport.

Sure, sure. BeantownEats is a Boston-based blog and and the namesake points directly to Boston-area eateries. However, we do occasionally find ourselves outside the cozy confines of the place we call home. So why not share those experiences with you, in case you ever find yourself in the same place and are looking for some good eats. Venue: Brick Alley Pub Locale: Newport, RI in the heart of the historic Thames Street, not far from the Waterfront. Crowd: Anyone from locals and Salve students to weekenders and cruisers. Why We Like It: IT’S FUN! When this restaurant/bar gets filled up with a great crowd looking to have a fun night, the upbeat atmosphere is so contagious that you can’t have anything but a great time here. What to Order: Start things off right with one of Brick Alley’s Famous Triple Shot Martinis. Their perfectly proportioned Brick Alley Cosmopolitan is made with Absolut Citron, Cointreau, Rose’s and cranberry. For something on the sweeter side, chose one of their four Specialty Margaritas. I recommend Julio’s Ultimate with Don Julio and Grand Marnier. In perusing the appetizer section of the menu, I was surprised to find a mention of Bon Appetit magazine. Brick Alley’s Portuguese Littlenecks were named in the 50th Anniversary issue as one of the best 13 recipes in the history of the magazine. So naturally I had to try them and I was not disappointed. Steamed with garlic, white wine, onion, pepper and chourico, these succulent clams left me wanting more. For something more traditional, try the Tuscan Bruschetta; the Italian bread was perfectly crisp and made the dish. Like all good pubs, the burgers at Brick Alley are a can’t miss. I recommend the Gourmet Burger, with bacon, portobellos, Great Hill bleu cheese and garlic-horseradish aioli. Following the seafood trend of the littlenecks, I had the Baked Stuffed Jumbo Shrimp. I was hesitant about the Jack cheese listed in the stuffing, but it wasn’t overly cheesy and provided a subtle glue to the light stuffing of crabmeat and scallops. Even with great drinks and food, my favorite thing about Brick Alley is the atmosphere. It’s just a fun place for any social occasion and one of my favorite out-of-Beantown Eats!

We went in search of oysters, and found SO much more. Scotch with ice balls and burgers. Oh my! Only at the Citizen Public House in Fenway. Citizen Signature Mint Julep: Named by Boston Magazine as the best mint julep in the city, this is a must try. If you’ve never had one before, this is the perfect one to start out with. Oysters: This IS an oyster house after all. Selection changes daily, guaranteeing freshness (and a nice variety too!). Ground Sirloin Burger: One of the best burgers I’ve ever had. Although served with cheddar, we ordered it plain and were really able to appreciate the true taste of the sirloin. Runner’s Up: Scotch with Ice ball: With 75 whiskeys, any connoisseur will have a field day at Citizen. This incredible variety is only topped by their copper ice ball maker, producing (in a matter of seconds) a perfectly sphere ball of ice to compliment whichever of the 75 whiskeys suits your fancy. Our two favorites are the Lagavulin 16 and Talisker 10. Whole Roasted Suckling Pig: Got 10 friends? Grab all of them and head to Citizen for a pig roast! Not only do you get a whole pig that has been slow-roasted for 14 hours, you also get assorted shellfish and some sides and veggies too. Invite BeantownEats, we’ll come! Ideal Manhattan: Citizen’s take on a classic Manhattan includes St. Germain and grapefruit bitters. This type of delicious innovation makes me confident that I could order any cocktail off the menu and enjoy it, that’s how good it was. Check out our Citizen Pig Roast post. Citizen Public House and Oyster is located at 1310 Boylston St in the Fenway area and walking distance from the Fenway T stop. Prefer to drive? Have your parking validated by Citizens and park for 3 hours for $4 at the 1330 Boylston Garage (entrance on Jersey St).

Looking for a kick-start to February, the month of Valentine’s Day? Hop on the T and head to Kenmore and Fenway’s offering of a winter aphrodisiac. First stop. Island Creek Oyster Bar, just steps off the Kenmore T stop at 500 Comm Ave (literally, come out of T exit, turn right and you are right there). The incredibly tall ceilings and square decor give ICOB a chic, trendy feel. The mood lighting seems to enhance the effects of the delicious oysters they serve. If you are lucky enough to get a table, be sure to take a trip to the oyster bar itself, to catch a glimpse of those succulent bivalves. If you grab a drink at the bar while waiting for your table, you will notice the bartenders’ attentiveness to their guests. They try to control the seating at the bar to avoid that feeling of someone hovering over your shoulder because you have a half empty glass of something good. Since their menu isn’t online, there’s a sneak peek at some of the offerings that were available when BeantownEats was in the house: Oysters from the Raw Bar: Island Creek (Duxbury MA, $2/ea), Peter’s Point (Onset MA, $2/ea), Blue Pool (Lillywaup WA, $3/ea), Shigoku (Bay Center WA, $3/ea) Others: Shrimp Cocktail ($2.5/ea), 1/2 Maine Lobster ($15) Warmer Temp: Fried Clams (sm $15, lg $27), Fish and Chips with Beer Batter and Malt Vinegar Aioli ($17), Grilled Wagyu Flat Iron Steak ($29), Potato Gnocchi with Lobster Knuckles, Pecorino and Meyer Lemon ($22) Make sure to take your time and read everything on their menu, so you don’t miss out on something amazing! If ICOB is too crowded, or you are prefer a less trendy facade, the 10-minute walk to Fenway’s Citizen Public and Oyster Bar is well worth it! With a more laid-back atmosphere, you will find your bartenders looking like they look like they just stepped off the set of Boardwalk Empire, complete with suspenders and skinny ties. Their oyster selection changes daily with typically 3-4 options for you to pick to your liking ($2.25/ea). For something with a higher internal temperature, try to the Grilled Clams with drawn jalapeno butter ($11) or the Oysters Rockefeller ($3/ea). These two oysters bars are 180 degrees apart from each other in terms of look and feel. But both offer great raw bar selections (not to mention great drinks too… more on that in a later post), so grab a friend or someone special, hop on the T and prepare for a night of indulgence.

In the city, it’s hard to find a good cocktail for less that $12. For being so close to Boston (Beacon St in Somerville), you can’t get a bigger bang for your buck (with high quality) than Trina’s Starlight Lounge. For starters, all of the cocktails on Trina’s drink menu are $9. If you’re lucky, Trina herself will be making your drink. The part-owner recently appeared on NBC’s On the Rocks, a reality show searching for America’s best bartender (check out Trina’s interview here). I recommend the Deconstructed Rum and Cola and the INMANhattan. Once settled in with your drink, there are several delicious appetizers that you can order without braking the bank. For only $4, you can order the Pepperoni Roll or for $5, try the BBQ Sweet Potato Chips and Dip. For those really seeking to stay under budget, check out Trina’s Dog selection. Craving a good old fashioned hot dog, the Griddled Dog ($3) is just that. Add Chili and Cheese for just $3 extra. Feeling adventurous? Ask about the Dog of the Day (market price) and you won’t be disappointed. If you are looking for something more hearty than a hot dog, don’t fret! Trina’s dinner menu is complete with a nice variety of entrees. If you are in the mood for comfort food, the Mac & Cheese ($9) is sure to satisfy your hunger. For all you carnivores out there, I recommend the Steak Frites ($16). Finally, don’t miss the Fried Chicken and Buttermilk Waffles ($14), named by Bon Appetite magazine as one of the top 10 best places for fried chicken! So if you want a creative cocktail, the Dog of the Day or dinner with friends, try Trina’s!
