Skinny Cocktails with Polar Seltzer
Pina Colada (105 calories)
- 1 1/2 oz Captain Morgan (90 cal)
- 1 1/2 oz pineapple juice (20 cal)
- 1/2 oz orange juice (5 cal)
- Polar Seltzer Pina Colada
Fill tall glass with ice. Combine first three ingredients; shake well. Top with seltzer. I like the orange and cherry garnish, although the cherry might add calories (but looks so pretty!).
With all of the pineapple and orange juices, I expected this drink to be way too sweet, but somehow it wasn’t; maybe the seltzer helps cut the sweetness without washing out the flavor. If making for a group, I think you could combine the two juices ahead of time to save yourself a step. Take this cocktail to the next level by using Appleton rum.
Mint Mojito (100 calories)
- 1/2 oz rum (95 calories)
- 2-3 sprigs fresh mint (0 calories)
- 2 Tbls fresh lime juice (5 calories)
- Polar Seltzer Mint Mojito
Fill a tall glass with ice. Combine first three ingredients; shake well (the more you shake, the more the mint flavor will come out). Top with Polar Seltzer and garnish with a lime wedge and/or a mint sprig.
That is the low-calorie recipe. Any drink with just a half ounce of booze isn’t really a drink in my book, and this one tasted weak and had way too much lime juice. I found that by adding another 1/2 ounce of rum (but doubling the calories), the drink was much more enjoyable. I was surprised that there was no sugar in the recipe (I usually add just a little bit of granulated sugar when I make mojitos, but was pleasantly surprised that no sugar was needed in this version.
The flavor of these two seltzers on their own are both a little too much for me; I prefer plain seltzer with just a squeeze of fresh lemon or lime, very minimalist. But mixed with some booze and I have to say that I had no expectation for these drinks, and both were surprisingly good (well, the mojito was with the extra rum). As you can see, these are easy cocktails that anyone should be able to make at home with minimal ingredients and cocktail-making skill. Their simplicity makes them perfect to throw in a cooler and bring to the beach or the boat, or even outside at your picnic table. Cheers!
Disclosure: Polar Seltzer provided one bottle each of the Pina Colada and Mint Mojito Seltzers; opinions are our own.
